In the course of conducting interviews for my book, I have asked a few hundred people for advice on how to drive the back roads. So often the response was to drive over 200 miles to a national forest or along a remote road, then look for one or two remote businesses along the way rather than locating something close. Almost nobody bothered to find anything closer, be it gas station, or restaurant, or any kind of accommodations.
10. The New York Times reported that when the nation's emissions standards were first set, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that 44,000 to 265,000 highway deaths each year would be avoided. Now after decades of the road trip, that number has quadrupled.
Some say the change is due to more people driving and greater road development, but motorists are also buying less fuel-efficient vehicles (narrowing the gap), and the perception of safety has inflated, so people drive much longer routes and have more time available for adventuring. In addition, the price of gas has sharply increased.
The Lincoln Administration inherited a transportation system that, for the first time in the nation's history, utilized federally granted rail rights-of-way for passenger and freight transportation. With a minimal amount of money and with the cooperation of a few states, they constructed a rail line that links cities like Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York and Washington to rail lines connecting to other cities and points.
If we continue to build our interstate highway system, with the more than $900 billion being spent to that end, we will be in exactly the same situation Lincoln was in, with a rail system that extends for thousands of miles across the country. It is estimated that an additional 25,000 miles of track will be required to connect all of the existing rail lines to more than 200 destinations. Some, in fact, estimate that it will take 30,000 miles of track to connect all the cities that are linked by rail now. d2c66b5586
